The LAS International Studies Minor will provide an opportunity for students in a variety of majors in LAS and other colleges at U of I to better understand our interdependent world and to develop much needed international skills. This interdisciplinary program draws upon the resources of faculty and departments across the University, affording students the opportunity to tailor course work to specific needs or interests. The LAS International Studies Minor complements any major on campus.
A total of 21 hours, with a minimum of 6 advanced hours, is required for the International Studies minor.

Language and Culture StudiesThis requirement has two components as follows: |
| (3) | Language Studies
Select courses from the approved list in a language other than the student’s primary language. This requirement is in addition to and may utilize courses in the same rubric used to fulfill the LAS College language requirement of four semesters or equivalent of college course work in a single language (16-20 hrs) or four years of a single language in high school. | (9) | Area Studies
200- through 400-level courses which complement the Language and Culture component must be selected from the approved course list and include work in at least two disciplinary departments. Select one area from the following: Africa, East and South Asia, Europe, Latin America, Middle East, Russia and Eastern Europe (NOTE: only one area may be chosen and it must correspond geographically with the I.S language. For instance, students of Spanish can choose EITHER Europe OR Latin America). For a list of approved courses, click here. |
